How many litres of water.....

How many litres of water make up a cubic metre? We've got a water meter and the bill shows how many cubic metres we've used. If we want to try to lower our consumption, I thought it would be helpful to know the litres that make it up! I've a fair idea of how many litres are used in most household tasks.

A litre of water has a volume of 1000cm3 (ie occupies a 10x10x10cm cube)

So a cubic metre of water has 1000 litres in it (And also weighs 1 tonne!)

Thank you, Buzzie for that quick reply! So, we have to save 1,000 litres to save one cubic meter....goes away to work out how we can do that!!!

A quick way to save water is by filling litre bottles and placing one in the cistern of each of your toilets. each time you flush the cistern fills up with one litre less, thereby saving you money

Thanks, proberts, that's certainly worth thinking about, but we do have two dual flush loos anyway, so they save a bit.

We do not have a meter and as a matter of interest what do you pay for a litre, and does it make you def. use less?

Before I had a meter I was paying �440 for 05/06 under the old rateable value system. For 06/07 the metered bill came to �250. There are 3 of us in the household & despite having to water my veg patch during the dry summer when my 4 water butts ran dry, I still saved nearly �200!

We've had a meter since 2004 and with only two of us in the house we've saved a lot on the old system. We're with Wessex Water and on the bill that we've just had, the prices are as follows..

Water supply 148.25p per cubic meter
Sewerage services 141.01p per cubic meter

The volume for both the water and the sewerage is always the same, but there is a 5% credit for water not returned to the sewer which is taken off that charge.

If you are with another water company, prices will vary.

We reckon that we are now saving something in the region of �200 a year. I've yet to find anyone who is not gaining by having a meter, even the family over the road from us with three children say it is cheaper for them. We've never deliberately set out to use less, so it just shows how we were being ripped off for our previous usage!

1 litre = 1000 cubic cm (10cm X 10cm X 10cm)
I cubic Metre = 100cm X 100cm x 100cm = 1000 Litres
