The formal title for serving and former US Presidents is 'Mr President'.

There will, at some point in the future, be a female President.

What will her official title be?

Mrs President? Madam President? Miss President?

Surely it can't be 'Miss President' - that sounds like the winner of beauty pageant...

The precedent for the future President exists within the US and the rest of the world.

US Secretaries of State - Mr./Madam Secretary
UK Parliament - Mr./Madam Speaker

The Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons is also addressed as "Monsieur le Président" or "Madame la Présidente" when French is being spoken.

L' Academie Francaise laboured long over this question. It was eventually decided that in the unlikely event of the French voting for a woman, she would be termed "Madame, Le Président"
Queen Elizabeth I had no compulsion about adopting the male gender, describing herself as a prince.

I know in 24 the tv series they had a female president and she was known as madam or mam.

Funny you should say that. I didn't watch any of 24 when it was broadcast, so now I'm watching it on Netflix. So far, they've had a black male President, a white male President, and just the other night (whilst halfway through series four), I wondered, "Will they have a female President down the line".

Will wait to see how they address her!
