this worries me if I do an early morning dog walk in our local park, what if ???? I have always told myself that I would keep on walking and let the next person be the "discoverer", but in actual fact I dont know !

very funny Baldric, my husband is blind and we dont have a labrador we have a shar pei and a rescue shar pei/staff cross.

Dee Sa - is the Shar Pei a guide dog? I don't think I have ever seen one so have no idea how big it is.

What amazes me is the amount of people who actually get killed when out walking their own dog. I know that it is probably only a handful of people a year but neither of my two dogs would let any stranger near me let alone hurt me. Granted one of them was about nine stone and the other a total psycho but I thought that dogs were meant to protect.

hi wolf, yep that's Eddy, nearly 8 now, had him from 7wks, he's picked up a prize or three in his time, the other one that appears (red collar) is Kim.

wolf no shar pei would make a terrible guide dog especially ours who is almost 14 years old and spoilt from day one. shar peis are the dogs with all the wrinkles when puppies and look so cute, but eventually they grow into their skin, they are very protective though, I pity any burglar who comes to ours ! sign on our back door with photo of similar dog reads "I can reach the fence in 2.5 seconds can you ?".

Kim is a lady? Are they related?

My first dog was a bullmastiff/GSD - he was a big soft lump but looked mean due to his size. He used to run away from home and go to he local infants school at break time to play with the kiddies - and maybe relieve them of some sweeties. He'd be shot for doing that these days.

Dee Sa - I think that I saw one of those dogs once, it looked odd in a nice way. You mention that your husband is blind - I was speaking to a woman with a guide dog (one who steals food off kiddies on the way past) and she told me that she has a black cat. I trip over my two black and white cats all the time, it seems that lying in doorways or at the top of the stair is an excellent place to snooze. They don't move - just glare at me and dare me to try and move them. I didn't think to ask her how she managed not to stomp on or trip over the cat - maybe her cat isn't quite so bloodyminded as my two.

Wolf, yes related, we rescued KIM (girl) when she was 2.5yrs, someone tried to drown her, came from same kennel as Eddy (they also do Dobie rescue) she was one of theirs, year younger than Eddy + same dad (sire) although we didn't get any paperwork, to ensure we couldn't trace original owner.

wolf its funny but both our dogs move out of the way for hubby who lost his sight about 8 years ago from diabetes,so he had sight when we got the dogs also when we got our ginger & white cat Violet Elizabeth Bott she seems to know when to move out of the way too. We rescued a blind shar pei that some cruel barsteward had tied to a dog shelter gate on xmas day [how could you do that ?] hubby wanted to keep him and he was so gentle but our male dog Taz would not have it and bit him so luckily the shar pei rescue found him a home and I drove him to Kent, I called him Oliver after my grandad and cried when I had to leave him but I get reports and he is doing well.

Baldric - I have often threatened my two moggies with violence and have offered to post them to a country where they are a delicacy. But some so-called humans are just sick - how can anybody be cruel to any other being either in an attempt to end its life, cause it harm or for their own enjoyment. Such people do not deserve to be allowed to have children as I don't even want to think about what they will do to them.

Dee Sa - I had my diabetic eye screening last week, it's always painless and quick. I am sure once your husband has stomped on the dogs and Violet a couple of times they got the hint. Shar pei's are still a rare breed and cost loadsa money - dumping one on Christmas day is cruel. I am glad that the ending is happy.
