Certainly King David was known as the Lion of Judah, though whether he named himself as such I am not certain. Cetti is the biblical ace, so I'm sure she'll tell us exactly, as soon as she finds this question.

TW is right - it was Haile Selassie who gave himself this name.

Ras meaning Duke or Prince, and Tafari (his original family name) meaning 'Might of the Trinity' . He was said to be a direct descendant of Solomon, and was in fact a christian, not a rasta.

QM - Did you see that amazing programme a few years ago about the church in the town of Axum? It's said that is where the the biblical Ark of the Covenant is lying after being taken from Jerusalem - and has been there for 3,000 years guarded night and day!! Btw, I just find the bible and it's history fascinating - ain't no expert :-)
