He's been sentenced to “preventive detention,” initially 21 years, and that can be extended for as long as he's considered dangerous to society in Norwegian law.
I think one of the reasons the trial played out such graphic detail is that whenever he's up for review, the evidence remains plainly there. So, for practical purposes in this case, probably a real "life" sentence.

^ sorry matt, in response to the op, what I really meant to say was;
"In the aftermath of an unprecedented incident in which the police response may or may not have contributed to a degree that I'm not qualified to comment on, imo the Norwegian judicial system has handled this creature very carefully. "
