He's still a fairly young man, will they really release him back into society when he's served this sentence?

Towards the end of his sentence they will determine whether he is still a danger to society. If so he will remain in custody until judged safe.
I hope not. I also hope they lose the key.
It has been said they reassess towards the end and can add another 5 year. Unsure if that's the limit or not.
Could be out in 10 apparently.

However you cut it 10 years or 21 for 77 deaths and hundreds of injuries ain't right.
good one, I watched the programme last night that inerviewed a couple of the young people who survived, they only survived because he missed, they were too far away or they hid. he tried to kill alot more, he was out of control and should always be considered dangerous.
Imo, the Norwegians have handled this very carefully.

He's been sentenced to “preventive detention,” initially 21 years, and that can be extended for as long as he's considered dangerous to society in Norwegian law.

I think one of the reasons the trial played out such graphic detail is that whenever he's up for review, the evidence remains plainly there. So, for practical purposes in this case, probably a real "life" sentence.
I agree sloopy, the Norwegian life sentence is too light by UK standards - this way, they can circumvent that and no he isn't coming out in ten years.
I reckon they've really nailed him.

Thoughts to those families, unimaginable horror.
"Imo, the Norwegians have handled this very carefully. "

Shame the Keystone Cops didn't do the same. How many died as a result of their stupidity ?
^ sorry matt, in response to the op, what I really meant to say was;

"In the aftermath of an unprecedented incident in which the police response may or may not have contributed to a degree that I'm not qualified to comment on, imo the Norwegian judicial system has handled this creature very carefully. "

Obviously. ;-)
Wasn't having a pop was just pointing out how inept the police were.
no, no, none taken, :) There's two just seperate things going on here for me.
Currently on the news....it is unlikely that this person will ever be released.
He won't survive long if he is ever released.
I agree with Hopkirk. Somebody will be waiting for him, even several somebodies. He may perhaps have to watch his back in prison.
He's being held in isolation for the forseeable starby
