Cleaning tiles

My son has just moved into a traditional 1930's house with an original black and white tiled hall floor. Someone has used adhesive to stick carpet down at some time, and he is trying to remove the residue of the glue. He has tried a bleach solution used with a coarse cloth, but it is a very slow process. Is he likely to damage the surface of the tiles if he scrapes the adhesive off?

Any other ideas welcome please.

try baby oil or olive oil - the olive oil you get from the Chemist

May be oil as suggested with a window scraper? Try a less noticeable area first! xxx

i think you may have to resort to a solvent
white spirits/turps or methylated spirit should do it , use rubber gloves though HTH Tez

A serious response, a gas blowtorch and scraper will do it. The tiles will be rock hard and impervious to a little heat.

The Tile Doctor products are very good we have used the sealer on quarry tiles. They have a product called Remove & Go which removes glue and cost about � 24 with postage.They have a website with all their products and how to use them.

Chemical solutions might be affects your tiles due to cleaning but homemade cleaners is best to use which gives the best results with cleaning. Using of vinegar and baking soda is also a effective way for tiles cleaning.
