Batch Renaming .jpg files

I'm using Windows 7 and I need to batch rename around 100 photographs on my hard drive. What would be the best method of doing so? Is there any reliable, free software that would do the job? I did come across a website that says that W7 will has a facility to rename a folder of .jpg files by just renaming the first but it looks to good to be true.
