Has anybody finished this? Got a full grid, the message and the four double defnition clues....and no idea what to do next. Found it tedious.

Why does Ifor's puzzles increase my blood pressure so much. Once again I am struggling to find the required end results. I have completed the grid ,and found the double definition amswers and their connection. O think I might know what the phrase under the grid should be, but how this relates to the two statements I have no idea. The first statement is very odd if the last three letters which are in 1, 2, and 3 down are correct. Since i do not possess Chambers (2011) is the final phrase the same in other editions.
I will persevere for another day or so and then I might take up Turner mjw's offer .

Not sure Shoni70, but I think you are trying to get the statements out of the superfluous letters, but those letters actually give an instruction which leads to the two statements.
I think I have the omitted thematic word, but still not sure how to modify the grid, so perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Well thanks to Turnerjmw I was led through the twists and turns of this very disappointing EV. What a finish! Quite stupid I thought and very tentative leads from literature to builders supplies. many thanke to TJMW for his forebearance and guidence, I would never have got there on my own.

I can't find a specific phrase to rub out from the pencilled grid - surely we aren't supposed to submit a completely blank grid ? If so, I agree it's pretty daft !
