please can anyone help with the following!


You have a patient who weighs 100kg. He requires an antibiotic administering intravenously via an infusion. The antibiotic comes in bags that contain 200 mgs in 200mls. The prescription asks for 2mg per kilogram of bodyweight. The instructions for administration state the infusion should be given at a rate of 200mgs over 60 minutes.

What hourly rate do you need to programme into the infusion pump?

Is mgs the same as mg or is one micrograms and the other milligrams?

Well the question just says hourly rate so this confused me too!
mg is milligrams and mgs is also milligrams. there was another 2 questions regarding the question above but I managed to answer them!! It is just the one above I cant work out ! thanks

the answer is 200 and correct cos I have checked ???? strange silly question huh!!

200mgms in 60 minutes, or 3.3mgms (recurring) per minute. Or 200 mls in 60 minutes.

That's why i thought the question seemed odd because the answer at every stage is 200-he needs 200mg (100 x 2 mg) for his weight of 100kg; that equates to 200ml based on the concentration in the bag; so to give 200mg or 200 ml at 200mg per hour means he needs the drip for an hour.

But the hourly rate you asked for has already been stated in the question at 200mg over 60 mins

on drips, the "rate" is set in mls/hr (or sometimes mls/24hrs)
