Charisma, how is it pronounced?

I always thought that charisma and charismatic where pronounced > Carizma and carizmatic<

But on this advert the small cowboy pronounces it as it's spelt which heavily relies on the >Ch< sound @15 and 18 seconds

Which is the right way?

I was introduced to a young lady whose name was Charis. When I saw it written I tought it would be pronounced to rhyme with "Harris". Actually, she called herself "Shareece" with tha accent on the last syllable.
Are there any other Charises out there who can confirm this?

While you are there, how do you pronounce chiropodist? I think it is kiropodist like chemist - I mean you would hardly say ch-emist would you? However I have heard lots of people say chiropodist and so I feel silly saying kiropodist, but if I am right I shall persist and think smugly that they are wrong. If I am wrong I shall sheepishly start saying chiropodist.

Chambers says kiropodist and kiropractor. Oxford says kiropractor but doesn't give a pronunciation for chiropodist, suggesting it's pronounced as written. My mum used to say shiropodist, but perhaps that was an old way of doing it that's died out, or perhaps she was just wrong.

which Hereford was that, Ellipsis? If it was an American one it may well be pronounced as written. They pronounce clerk to rhyme with jerk, and have Barkshires.

"Ch" in French is pronounced "sh", hence the confusion with English words derived therefrom.

jno, Sean Bean's character was claiming to be ex-SAS. Robert de Niro's character (correctly) didn't believe him. To test him out, he demanded "What's the colour of the boat house at Hereford?" over and over until he cracked - Hereford being the home of the SAS.

What Sean Bean's character should have said was "You obviously don't know, you've never been there, because if you had you'd know it was pronounced Herryford". And therefore not cracked.

But what Sean Bean the actor should have said (as a prelude to a retake) was, "Look Bob me old mate, yer method actin's let yer down 'ere, it's 'Erryford. Don't say 'Earford or yer'll look like a right tit int cinema."
