Our Wii has been a big flop, including the kinnect thing (the kinnect is very sensitive and needs a certain amount of space, etc). My girls are not interested in gaming but each of the boys has an x box.

Wii and Xbox are based for families, PS3 is more a gamers console even if its trying to branch out to family games.

Xbox with kinect is on a slightly different level to the wii in as much as its streets ahead.

Also I say the ratio of xbox/ps3 owners is about 80/20 so theres a fair chance his mates will be on there and they can either game online or borrow each others games.

If you are going to buy a new console and there is no urgency I would suggest waiting until October/November when the Xmas deals arrive.

Xbox and PS3 have a very similar library of games. The main difference is that Kinnect and Move, and Kinnect is probably better.

It's about the games more than the console itself though. If they're bored with Wii games it could be sign that you get them different games, not a different console.

I have all three of the consoles that have been mentioned below.
I am an avid Xbox 360 fan and will not have a bad word said about it. I have a 3 year old that loves the Kinect, I have a a 11 and 14 year old that also love the Xbox and Kinect.
The PS3 is a very good console but as someone mentioned earlier it is aimed more at the older gaming generation although there is a good selection of kids games like Little Big Planet. The Playstation Move is ok, a little dated compared to the Kinect. My PS3 is sadly just a gloryfied media player.
The Wii unfortunately once was a good console for its original concept but
sadly now gathers dust.
Just to throw another spanner in the works for you in October Nintendo are releasing the Wii U the second generation Wii console which is gonna put them right back in the market. If this is gonna be a Christmas present hang fire and watch for the Wii U adverts, I am sure they will want one.
If it is for now then I will say Xbox all the way. Sorry to all PS3 users but this is personal preference

I wouldn't get an xbox with kinect uless you have a large room to play it in. our xbox has sat in the box gathering dust for a while because of the space requirements.
