Do you mean anti-spyware?
if you mean a program to stop it in its tracks Spybot Search & Destroy is free and good. It duplicates the files so the sender thinks they're still ok

Try also ad-aware here also free

I think the best of the lot is Stop-Zilla, unfortunately it is not free, but you can download it free to do a scan of your PC, but if you want to then clean out what it finds you have to register it. I tried it and it found a lot of junk that Spy-bot and ad-aware missed on my computer.

You may sometimes find that although programs like Adaware and Spybot detect spyware and say it's deleted after you run it, some stubborn spyware reappears after reboot no matter how many times you run the antispyware program to delete it.

One powerful tool that combats this is called HIJACK THIS.

As it involves manually editing your registry, it should only be used if you know what you're doing. But don't worry, you can run the program, create a log of your registry associated with your Internet browser then post this log to a forum of experts who will tell you what to delete.

Visit: http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ for full details and a download link.

Also after you have run and deleted the Spyware, your registry may be in such a mess that Internet Explorer will not connect at all. Another good program to have to hand before removing Spyware is WINSOCK FIX. XP SP2 has this utility built in now:-

For Windows XP, Service Pack 2, do this, at a command prompt:

netsh winsock reset

enter
restart machine.

Sorry I don't know a legitimate link to download this program for other OS but have found this one in a XP forum right at bottom of page. As with all antispyware related programs, be careful what you are downloading doesn't actually contain Spyware itself!

If you do actually mean Spyware then I remember a group called Cult of The Dead Cow releasing software that allowed remote access to someones PC. We used to have fun in the early days of the consumer internet by remotely opening our unsuspecting friends CD Rom drawers over the net. Litte things please little minds and all that! I think that COTDC now call themselves Hactivismo.
