I can't work out whether I am being completely stupid here. There are four four letter clues. One I think is a divided eight. The others are O and Y, both of which I have right, but I can't fit in the grid at all.

The 4 four letter clues are Y Y O and S. Both M and N are entered as 8 letter words.

You are all being very polite. Am I being stupid? Yes because I can't count that there are four four letter clues.

How do you know yalu is a down clue? I have it as a down, but it is a guess. I can't see the french directional indicators.

Two directional clues are in the 3 squares reading across from the top left hand corner and the 5 bottom row right hand corner squares.

Similarly top left hand corner side squares & bottom RH corner side squares.

I'm not sure I agree with Keith 14.

If the grid has been correctly filled the French word for North should be in the top NW corner (4 letters). Symmetrically 'South' ( 3 letters) are SE corner.
East (3 letters) and West (5 letters) are side left & side right respectively.
