The ramblings of an eccentric old man stuck in the past? A homophobic nutter or just a concerned father who grew up in a different world?
Not trying to make any points either way here, although seems very odd to me.
SP, I'm sure you will have plenty to say.

Seem like you have already done so ie "The ramblings of an eccentric old man stuck in the past? A homophobic nutter"
Been a much more balanced comparison to have pointed out he might just like to have a future grand-child so as to carry on his line.
Also the fact that he is Chinese and may not possess the liberal thinking Western ways.
/// Same-sex marriages are not recognised in Hong Kong, where homosexuality was only decriminalised in 1991. ///

I would have thought it more in line with jack-the-hat's thinkings?

Not sure what his problem is but if he thinks that his daughter is going to fall in love with someone whom she knows is only interested in her because of £40m then he is seriously deluded.

It is one thing to woo, quite another to "win a heart". She'd need to be bisexual to even consider some man. And if she feels she is already in a happy relationship then it looks even more doomed.
Since homoesexuality was only decriminalised in 1991, then the guy is clearly from a culture that feels it is very wrong, and simply wants what he believes to be best. To persuade his duaghter to have a normal mixed gender partnership.
Just an act of deperation from a guy who can not accept the change in attitudes and the present situation. It's also possible he hopes for grandchildren ?

//"I don't mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind hearted," 76-year-old Mr Chao was quoted as saying.//
I'm all of that - i.e. poor generous and kind hearted - not to mention handsome - i'm sure i'll be able to 'turn' her .
Is there an application form ?

Excellent opportunity for his daughter to make a lot of money. All she needs to do is find a chap herself, and secretly sign a contract with him, allowing them to marry but effectively live individual lives.
Then they'd be rolling in money, and grandpa will have the perfect illusion of a 'straightened' daughter.

You reap what you sow as the saying goes. According to the report he raised her by 'hands-off approach' meaning no boyfriends are allowed - no hard to believe in wealthy Chinese families circles, probably too snobbish to think her daughter is too good for any man and now maybe she is subconsciously rebelling against her father's wishes plus she might just be following fashion trends to be gay.
Has being gay ever been a 'fashion trend', Beswad? I don't remember that. Glad I missed it, if I did. I had enough trouble wearing flairs. And I certainly am not aware of it now. Can you name any gays who are only so temporarily, as the fashion runs?
This is just an old man who doesn't want to accept that his daughter is a lesbian, that's all. He has lived, and was brought up in, very different times.

I agree with old geezer, he is an old man who more than anything wants to see his daughter married and perhaps have children. His daughter on the other hand has probably seen at first hand what being a woman means to her father after 10.000 totties and one on the go, and wants none of it, preferring to find solace with someone of her choice.
