Squealing

Squealing when brake pedal is depressed .

Does that necessarily mean time for new brake pads / shoes and a trip to the garage ?

Iv'e tried to have a look to see if i can see through the wheel , but it is not the tpye where it can be seen easily

How is your tracking (is the wheel pulling to one side when brake is pressed)?
When did you last have your pads replaced?
It is an indicator that something i a miss but without hearing the noise I cant be of more help, get it looked at.

many brake pads have wear indicators that start squealing under braking when the pads get low..
Out of interest what vehicle are we talking about ??

chas2008 - a Pegeout 307 - 51 plate .

Out of interest would the number of notches you have to pull the handbrake up by, to hold the car ;be determined by the wear of the pads/shoes ?

Poss down to the rivets - needs checking.

not over familiar with a 307 but im sure it has pads front & rear, no shoes..

RIVETS? Is it a model T Ford?
Squeal may simply be a buoldm up of brake dust. Give it a squirt from a hose!
Your local tyre depot will usually check brakes FOC but may well "find" something, will find something if you go Kwik Fit!

Bazile, the pads wants taking out & a smear of copper grease putting on the reverse side of the pad ( The Metal Part) be very careful not to get the grease onto the brake lining. It can be done in under an hour.

Did anyone mension K.F.? are you Izzed Mjwman? its the brakes Bazile is on about not a new engine, Gearbox, Disks, Tyres. I think you may know what I mean.

Maybe some oil or grease has got onto the pads.

Could be that the brake pads have glazed.

Do they squeal all the time or only for a short while after periods of non-use of the car ?

If the former then I would say the pads or worn out and you are hearing metal on metal.

If the latter then it's due to light surface rust on the discs which scrubs off after a few minutes of use.
