Conversion of Word documents to .pdf files
Can anyone recommend a reliable and preferably free tool for converting Word files to pdf format. Ideally I'd like to be able to edit the resulting pdf files but a reliable conversion would be a good start. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

They give it away as an introduction to their main product line, but if all you want to do is to create a simple pdf, it's great. Because it behaves as if it were a printer, It works just as well with web pages and spreadsheets.
I have submitted my accounts with Corporation Tax returns in this way for several years, and use it several times each day.

I know the latest version of Open Office (3) has an option to export to PDF via an add-on. You can also edit PDF's - I was impressed when I had a look.

Office 2007 has a free pdf plugin available from Microsoft. It converts links, index and table of contents. Cute and the other free converters (as well as a couple of the paid ones I have tested) can't do this.
If you need to edit a pdf the only real choice is Foxit PDF Editor. Adobe PDF Editor is lame and shouldn't even be called an editor as it is not capable of making detailed changes.
Foxit Editor has a fully featured trial version but leaves an evaluation mark on the edited pages.
Incidentally Foxit's free pdf reader is far far better than Acrobat reader. It even allows filled out forms to be saved. Unlike the Acrobat bloatware it loads in an instant. The download is also tiny by comparison.
