The MSE icon is showing red and says that real time protection is turned off. please turn on, which it won't do, and eventually it said 'can't turn it back on because 'Real time protection has expired' I did a full scan and it was fine but again said .Please turn real time back on. What do I do now please? I have XP,Mozilla Firefox, MSE , Malawarebytes and Zone alarm Firewall. TIA -rosy

It's just a guess but it is possible that there is a conflict in your systems protection and Zone alarm is causing a problem. Remove Zone Alarms, you don't need it. Click open MSE then Settings > Real Time Protection and make sure the box is ticked.

Ron.
Zone Alarm firewall is better than XP's own firewall. If you do turn off Zone Alarm make sure you re-enable XP's firewall.
I don't have experience in this specific question but does MSE have a subscription ? If so it may well have run out.

If an AV subscription runs out the AV doesn't stop working, it just means your AV database is no longer updated with new information so gets progressively less protective over time.
Maybe it's just the 'always on monitoring' aspect as opposed to the 'run me when concerned' ability that is affected by subscription ?

MSE is a freebie from Microsoft. I suspect they might well turn it into a complete security suite one day and start charging then.
To be fair I've had a search onthe Net and can not spot a reference to a subscription. I think my advice would be to uninstall and reinstall the latest version. See if that made a difference. Nothing in your list appears to be a seconid AV so it ought not be conflilcting with them.
Please ignore all the typos. Forgot to proof read that one and so the usual million of them are there.

Thank you all for your kind replies and suggestions X I tried and tried last night but got nowhere, Icouldn't tick the box in MSE Ron, it just kept telling me to but wouldn't do it. Yes Alice I did wonder if they had decided to charge for MSE but neglected to let me know -hence the problem. Anyway when I switched on this a.m. everything is back to normal (touch wood) and the real time box is ticked - strange very strange. I ran full scans with them and malaware which both came back o.k.Thank you again for the advice -rosy
