Once again the winter is here and so its time to deal with slippery roads and so on.

I thought the other day wether it might not be easier for the school holidays to be split a little better than they are. If we took a week or two off the summer and hook it on to the winter hols it would work better. For one it would cut down on the heating bills for the scholls. Kids and parents wouldn't have to freeze their assets off on cold winter mornings. I always thought the summer hols were a little to long. Thios way everyone wins. Kids still keep the same amount of hols a year and they won't have time to get bored in the summer and less exposure to the cold in the winter.

What do other parents think

Thanks for your time

split it! about 12 weeks a year (give or take) so 4 4 4 (spring, summer, winter) yes, i'd vote for it!
There are already plans to cut the summer holidays down to four weeks and adding the other two weeks on to Christmas and Easter.

lol The staff have to get there in the freezing cold too eupraxia! I don't like having to walk to work at 7:15 every morning - especially at this time of year!!

LOL sorry Lore of cause the teachers have to as well. So I doubt if you would mind either if the winter hols were extended.

No thank you. Two weeks off in winter is enough. I like my seven weeks in the summer to go somewhere warm.
I personally NEED the time off in the Summer. I am so emotionally exhausted by the time they arrive, it takes me 2 weeks to get out of school-mode, 2 weeks to sit around thinking "What the hell am i doing wasting my life??!?!" and another 2 weeks to start getting my lessons ready for the next year. Trust me, teachers NEED six weeks.

Historically the long break in the summer was to allow children of rural parents to help with harvesting the crops, eg. soft fruits, apples etc; and then helping to preserve them for the winter. It was a compromise to stop them missing school altogether when they were needed at home.

Why we still stick to a school calendar that was designed for Victorian farming methods is a bit of a mystery when most things are done by machines these days!

I did hear rumours a while back that they were going to split the school year into four terms with equal holidays. They did do an experiment in Essex I think it was last year, but haven't heard any more about it.
