Am I covered for this?

Whilst on holiday this morning I drove carefully through a flooded road after observing other cars get through, when a 4x4 decided to come through the other way. His wash swamped my car which then came to a halt. After being pushed out of the flood I discovered my engine was ruined and is currently awaiting recovery.

My question is this, am I covered for repairs with my comprehensive policy? Currently I'm in the wilds of Herefordshire and can't get a mobile signal to communicate with the insurance comany.

Comprehensive insurance will cover the damage.

it seems pretty unlikely to me
Can't you email them, you got through to AB with no probs?
Fully comp then yes it should cover you... however your premium will increase so much over the next few years it might not be worth making the claim.
Who has said your engine is ruined? You may just find that when it has had time to dry out properly it could be okay.

Thank you all for your replies.

Baldric: I've now made contact with my insurance company who will let me know their answer after their representative has inspected the car.

At least they didn't turn down my claim immediately. I asked the question to get the views of the learned AB audience to see what they thought.

But, as the views on here do differ somewhat, I will have to wait for the insurance company to get back to me.

Many thanks.
hope it is covered wiltsman
Good luck with it. Hope it gets sorted.
Typical arrogant 4x4 behaviour - no consideration for "lesser" mortals.
It's chucked in down here in Hereford overnight and this morning - people opposite had to have sand bags outside their houses!
Comprehensive insurance will cover the damage.

Thank you - I hope so!
just how was the 4x4 driver supposed to know that would happen?
i doubt it would even occur to most people.

a floodwash would happen with any vehicle, large ones with vans etc - do you just expect them to wait indefinitely for a gap, blocking the road?

perhaps the poster should have waited until the 4x4 had passed first ?
Agree with joko.

Although I cant see how that would cause your engine to stop, at worse I'd say it was 50/50 chance the 4X4 caused it
yes, we deal with flood damage cars after serious flooding the engine is usually damaged when someone turns it over (ie start it) when the exhaust is submerged, it causes the pistons to hydraulic which bends the conrods...game over. Thats why the advice is when driving through water keep the revs up and stop for anything...
oops, typo error
'dont stop for anything'

Joko - I was already driving through the water before the 4x4 entered it.
i was responding mainly to canarys assertion that this was somehow the fault of the 4x4 driver simply because they are arrogant and selfish ... so they must have done it on purpose...
if anyone is still following this, we are about to fit an engine to a Corsa that was flood damaged....just had authority from the insurance engineer

UPDATE

My insurance company has allowed my claim, but I'm still waiting to hear from their appointed engineer whether it can be repaired, ie new engine needed, or whether it will be written off with a cash payment being made to me.

I hope it's the former, as I'm a bit wary about a cash payment for a written off car.
