I laughed so much when I read this. I just don't believe that they didn't know what it was. I mean, who'd buy a shrub then tend it so carefully without bothering to check what it is and what growing conditions it needs?

I'm sure if the police had searched their house they would have found loads of Rizla packets

Ahhh, the "I didn't know, officer" defence!

Do you think there are now stoners touring car boot sales just in case they find a similar plant?
Many, many years ago, after living apart from my then husband for a while, I returned to live with him again and carefully nurtured the lovely plant he had in the living room. As I was known by him and his friends to be very anti-drug it caused them much secret amusement. It was only after I positioned it in a window where it could be seen by passers-by that he told me what it was.
I'm not surprised, it's hemp, grown for fibre and making rope. There was a whole field of near me some years back. I collected some to give a talk on rope making. There are 2000 varieties of which marijuana ( Cannabis sativa ) is one. I would guess the one they had was an industrial one and harmless. It would make a nice house plant .In any case it would have to be grown with plenty of heat to be a drug.
