slanderous remarks and the police

My question is if someone has been spreading slanderous things about a person which then leads to a confrontation can the police be involved to sort things out.

If there is any violence it is definately a police matter.
Slander is normally a civil matter.

Yes there was but im not so worried by that it's more rubbish that has been spread which hurts the most.
Basically it's about some people questioning my sexual preferences. I was wondering if the police could take any action as in the same way they would in racism case.to me not a lot of difference.

Slander is a defamatory statement not in permanent form and is usually only actionable on proof that it has caused financial or material loss. If violence was involved the police should certainly be notified as Brian says, if not I think you will find it difficult to get the police to take an interest. If you wish to cause the comments to cease you may wish to ask a solicitor to write a suitably worded letter to the originator of the comments.

Tony wiltshire is correct but you have to have a deep pocket for it.

Do no tget in involved in actions for slander - both parties frequently go bacnkrupt with the cost of lawyers.

Laugh it off and/or ignore it - who cares what people say about your preferences.

One lad of 11 though it was the funniest thing to reach his three year old sister to shout hello gay boy to me whenever I passed the house......The father thought it was less funny
in fact not funny at all.

Me ? I dont speak to small children at all unless a parent is present or I have a dog on the lead. -
