Not really keen on Stephen Tomkinson in this role, not how I picture Banks at all. What do you think ?

To be honest I can't watch much with him in it. I just don't like the actor, he sounds and looks the same whichever role he plays.
I love it!
Must say I also enjoyed it, as regards Stephen Tomkinson, although he seemed completely out of place in 'Wild at Heart' (didn't seem rugged enough) I think he fits the role as DCI Banks quite adequately.
I have never found ST a very convincing actor.

I think he reached his level in Drop the Dead Donkey
As above cahaptaz .. I don't rate him as a very good actor.
I really love the DCI Banks books but can't watch this as I agree he does suit the role.
He seems to always adopt that puzzled expression as he did as a priest in Ballykissangell.
No I thought it he didnt fit the character but will watch on.
Love the programme, but he's not as I see him in the books.

Thanks for all your answers. He almost spoils it for me because he's not as I imagine DCI Banks at all (like you giveup), but I'll carry on watching it. After saying that though, I don't know who could play him and depict the wonderful character in Robinson's books.
How about Martin Shaw,I could watch him all day long.
I don't watch it because of Stephen Tomkinson. Very insipid individual and I don't think he can act either.

Maybe Martin Shaw in his younger days, yes, but I think he's too old for the part now.
Anyone remember Martin Shaw as Adam Dalgleish? Now that was a huge error. I don't know the DCI Banks books so I'm quite happy to watch Stephen Tomlinson in the role.
It's odd isn't it how we develop a mental picture of characters, we knew a DJ on BFBS and he was always being told he didn't look like his voice.
Wasn't it Roy Marsden who played Adam Dalgleish?
Totally agree Stephen Tompkinson is nothing like you visualise when reading the books. He spoils it. I don't think Annie is right either.
Yes it was Roy Marsden for most of them and when I read PD James, I "see" him as Dalglish, but Martin Shaw was brought in for a couple of episodes, The Murder Room and Death In Holy Orders. Apparently, PD James didn't like Roy Marsden as Adam Dalglish
I'd like to see someone new. Fed up of seeing the same old faces!
