Police Central e-crime Unit (PCEU) ransomware

I got this the other day and it blocked me from doing anything.
It looked very official but I am not a terrorist and have neve looked at child porn as it insinuated.
Besides even if I had what "official" police site would unlock my PC for £100 payment?

Eventually I managed to do a system restore to an earlier date and all appears well....at the moment.

2 questions.
1) is the trojan still there and will it re-appear?

2) How do I know which is the right removal tool/method? A few come up when googled.

Thanks.

Firstly, what anti-malware are you using, if any? Any decent one should not have permitted this into your machine in the first place...
Malwarebytes (the free version) should get rid of this nasty (or verify that it is no longer there).

Once clear, scan once a week or so - use as well as a decent anti-virus (Avast/AVG/MSE).

I'd like to hope nobody would be daft enough to fool for such an obvious scam!

(oh and malwarebytes should clear it, but as MR says... it shouldn't be there to start with)

I "chatted" to Mcafee this afternoon on line and asked this same question. They did not answer why it got there but I was given a link to download and run "Stinger" which I did.
It found and corrected one virus.
I cannot remember what it was called, Adios or similar I think.
I don't know if that was it or not.
I am running Malwarebytes now as a precaution.
I'm pretty sure that system restore is just a temporary fix. Here's a tip from Microsoft MVP:

"...Using System Restore when there is malware present may result in the Restore Points being
infected as well.."

I recommend using Malwarbytes or MSE to remove the remnants of this virus.
