Victory for Free Speech?
16 Answers
Some posts here in recent months have touched upon an attempt by Muslim states to attempt to introduce a worldwide blasphemy band via the UN.
Good news is that such efforts have been firmly repulsed, and now the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Countries) Have said they have given up on the idea and will not seek to impose this ban again.
Some recognition by the muslim states that such highly violent overreactions are unjustified, do you think?

No, I don’t. Unless I've missed something, I see no indication of that in the report.
//but appealed for states to apply hate-speech laws concerning Islam.//
It was an impossible request – they realise that - but they clearly haven't given up the idea - just changed tactics.

Another important milestone for secular morality.
We just need to keep chipping away at the power and influence of religion and eventually it will fade away having been widely recognised as an anachronism.
The more the faithful take a stand to defend the criticisms leveled at them by atheists the more they reveal the deep flaws in their doctrine and expose the deep fascism inherent in beliefs of the the Abrahamic religions.

I am surprised that this nonsense was ever taken seriously in the first place. As I pointed out when it came up last time, the UN has no authority to pass laws. Nor is there any body which can pass laws with validity world-wide. Best just to laugh at the idea.

. . . 'twas not always so. If it had never been taken seriously by someone I hate to speculate on who would have had the last laugh.
As it is, not everyone around the world enjoys the luxury of being in a position where they can simply . . . laugh it off.

Slight misunderstanding here, I think. I know that the idea of a ban is shockingly illiberal - and very dangerous, certainly no laughing matter, if implemented.
What is nonsense is the idea that it COULD be implemented, since there is not an organisation in the world that could pass such a law. The fact that the promoters suggest the UN shows that the don't know how that organisation works. That is what we should laugh at.

Chakka, I can’t laugh at such ignorance. Coming from senior politicians it’s quite worrying. That is not, of course, to say that those in the east are necessarily alone in their stupidity. ;o)
//I suspect that some ardent Christians might feel the same if it were implemented.//
No doubt – but it says little for their intellect and even less for the strength of confidence in a personal faith that requires the law to protect it from criticism.

Again, bible prophecy points towards a world government. Such a government WOULD be able to pass such laws.
We are not there yet, but well on the way, with the first steps alredy taken in bodies such as international criminal courts, global trade agreements, and the U.N. is a perfect stepping stone for future progress towards world government.
Laugh it off? I doubt it. Public offence laws in this country are already the tail that wags the dog.

why would I want to shave a muslim, Theland?
And all your supposed biblical prophecy remains a fantasy cooked by those who wish to see the provenance of biblical prophecy.
Somewhere down the line, we may arrive at some sort of global government - but you only have to look at the very slow progress of european integration even when you exclude everything except trade to know that its not going to happen anytime soon. Or look at the euro, and recognise as many commentators do that it was an overambitious project, ahead of its time, and has cost taxpayers plents and beggared countries.
NWO and all of that remains a figment of the imagination, more suitable for the conspiracy musings of a David Icke or Prison Planet than any serious theologian....

Theland - I wouldn't rely too much on bible prophesies if I were you. (But then, if I were you I probably would!)
How would a world government come about? If democratic, can you imagine thousands of millions of people agreeing on one set of people to govern them all? What nationality would they be? If not of a particular religion they would not be accepted by the fanatics of that religion. Use your imagination on something practical rather than your usual superstitions.
If not democratic, who would accept the laws passed by this government?
Not the only daft idea in the bible.
