Microsoft updates

For the last three days everytime I have switched off the computer I have had the message not to switch off as it is instaling updates. This is happening up to five times a day - yes, I know, I am a bit of an addict when it comes to the computer. Just now it installed when I booted up. Is there something going on with Microsoft that we shold know about as it is getting rather annoying now? Once or twice a week is fine but now it has gone past a joke. Thanks for any ideas.

Did you shut it down anyway before it had finished installing the updates...?

Also, why are you shutting down 5 times a day, surely it would be easier to leave the computer on if your only going to be away from it for a short time.

I always leave it to switch it off itself after it has finished its updates. I switch off everytime I finish using it because I don't know when I will be back and I don't like to leave things running if I am not using them becaue I need to keep an eye on the electricity bill. Thanks to both of you for your interest and help.

Mine haven't updated since June. When I try to install the now 29 outstanding updates they chug away but are constantly shown as 0% complete. I spent an hour yesterday trawling through suggestions on their website but nothing worked. Should i be that worried- am I likely to miss anything important?

Well it is just once as it the only time I've ever raised an issue. It's XP if that matters. My only question was whether i need to lose sleep over not getting updates.

I get nothing on my screen as far as I know- I just noticed I hadn't had any updates for a while so I checked my update history- which is how I know it was 26 June 2012. It says last checked on that date. I have checked my settings and they are set to update automatically at daily intervals. I have tried to manually select the outstanding updates shown (29 of them) but it just chugs away showing 0% complete until after a many hours I get fed up and turn it off

I'm not sure what you mean by Windows Event Viewer.

Is that Windows XP with SP3 ?

Try just doing a couple of the older updates first and see what happens.

Thanks Slack Alice. I'm conscious that what was a general comment/enquiry could now be hijacking quizbag's thread now.
Sorry, I was wrong when I said it was XP. The problematic laptop r is actually Windows Vista. The XP I got from some of the updates that seem to relate to XP. Something maybe going wrong there then.
Anyway, I'll try just doing one or two at a time and spend a day on this on Friday when I have some time.

Thanks. I'm trying to update one at a time now but the few I've tried have all stuck at 0%.
I'm opening up the Event Viewer now

Mmm. Looks complicated. It seems the Windows Updates are being Paused and it's listed as Event 27

That fix it tool is quite good, so I'd confirm methyls advice.

Event 27 as listed by factor30. All I can find is that it relates to Windows 2008 server edition

Thanks everybody for your help. Methyl the only thing I know about the workings of the computer is that it is Microsoft Office Word 2007. Luckily my computer savvy son is coming this weekend so he will be able to sort it out. Thanks for your advice and interest.
