I've only recently started watching this and need someone to fill me in on the back story, please. Why is Merlin undercover as a servant? I'm assuming that only Gaius knows about his powers - is that right? Does Morgana know who he is? And why is John Hurt in the credits as a talking dragon, when he doesn't seem to be in it?
He's not undercover as a servant, he IS a servant. This series is set when he and Arthur are young, Arthur has only just become king and Merlin is just a servant who happens to have special powers which he has to keep secret because he would be executed if anyone found out. Gaius knows about his powers but no one else in Camelot does, including Morgana..although...

Apparently :)
I don't watch it but someone sitting next to me does.
Other people have got to know about his powers though Arthur still doesn't. Sorcery is a crime in Camelot and often punishable by death. Moreso under the reign of Arthur's late father.
The dragon (voiced by John Hurt) was in it far more in earlier series (he used to be imprisoned in the dungeons in Camelot and Merlin used to go there for his help/advice). I think he also does the voiceover bit in the starting sequence.
Morgana does know he has power, I thought she did anyway. He also is known in more magic circles as Emeris. It might be worth looking up some of the past happenings of things, especially as Mordred is coming back into it.
