The movie I have in mind is 'The Day After Tomorrow'.

Strange but I would have thought the subway was the safest place to be
like London, the subway isn't all below ground. I suppose there's also a risk of water pouring down entrance steps or getting into the electrics
And also I suppose that whilst the track itself goes for miles the station part could only hold a relative few people
it's odd but you can actually walk some of the NY subway - station platforms are so long in some places you literally walk to the next station. I expect they're for emergency purposes.
the news has not been good, 13 dead so far.
