Hurricanes

Forgive my ignorance on this as I'm sure the answer is fairly obvious but can anyone explain to me what stops a hurricane/tornado etc reaching the UK?

I'm sure we've hada few minor things in the past but nothing major.............that I can remember anyway. ( I am only 29 though)

I think they blow themselves out over the ocean. We did have a hurricane in the eighties. It took Michael Fish by suprise.

We do get the remains of them, and will probably get the tail end of Stanley.

They begin and grow more powerful in the warm seas near the equator and carry on growing until they hit a land mass or cold seas further north...by the time they get across the cold Atlantic they are usually just wind and rain...
