Name this pup !

About 10 pm on Sunday, my 13 year-old Irish wolfhound bitch died in her sleep. I have two other wolfies, but I couldn't stand the absence of Nuala; it didn't seem right to see an empty bed, as it were. Replacement dog found yesterday,collected today, is a 3 month old Irish wolfhound dog pup with a German sire and a Polish dam, from a a breeder friend.

Now, what to call him ? You have Irish, obviously, but also Polish and German male names to suggest, or any other,though those three seem the natural source

Thanks . And thanks for your sympathy. I'll 'road test' these (but please keep them coming) and see whether he reacts to any. If he responds to Adolf, I might have second thoughts!

At present I feel surprisingly detached from the death. I think that I was prepared for it, given her age, and relieved that she died peacefully in her sleep. But there's still that I go out and she's not where I expect, not is she greeting me as I return,always first up, sticking her head in the car, expecting treats, simply not there. But a young life in her stead cheers; life goes on.

If I ever have dogs they will be called Baxter (of Anchorman fame) and Fenton/Benton (sure some will recognise the name).

I'm biased but Padraig, meaning Noble or Patrician is a fine name for a wolfie.

Padraig wins it ! Thanks Paddywak. Now I only have to learn how to pronounce it; I appreciate that it varies across the country. But I did name a bitch Caoimhe once, so that'll be nothing new. And he'll end up being called 'Paddy' by everyone anyway, I don't doubt it.

I've only just spotted this thread. I am so sorry to her about Nuala, Fred. It's such a hard thing when an animal member of your family dies. Sending you cyber-hugs!

Padraig is a lovely name for a wolfie, and Paddy is a good doggy nickname. If I'd got in earlier, I would have suggested that with Irish, Polish and German ancestry, he's got to be American, but Padraig is loads better than Hank or Buddy! x

Fred, I'm honoured that you have chosen to call your new baby after me (it's my middle name) and I hope you have a long and happy life together. I'm sorry to hear about your loss I know how you feel I had to have Max my GSD put to sleep in March and we miss him a lot but neither Trish or myself feel we could take another dog at the moment.

I understand that Paddy, not feeling you can take on another dog, and sympathise. Your namesake is one of nine dogs here; he's "merely" the third wolfhound; so taking on another was a bit easier than for normal, sane, households. His breeder, incidentally, has 14 adult wolfhounds; it can get addictive!

He's answering to the babyish 'Pad- Pad', at present. That's simply because the puppy is responding to the first hard sound in the name or word. I promise I'll have him addressed by, and responding to, your proper name shortly; whether that's as 'Pod-rick','Porrick', 'Padrick' or any other version. (It'll end up being Paddy, regardless)

Glad to hear he's doing ok Fred can we have some pictures please? As to the pronunciation mum always called me "Paw-drig" how ever not being an Irish speaker I'm open to correction.

So sorry to hear about Nuala Fred - it's never easy losing one of them but going in your sleep is a very acceptable ending whether you are human or animal in my opinion.
The pronunciation is more likely to end in a 'g' and not a 'k' e.g. Podrig, Pawdrig or Porrig. Would never have heard it pronounced as Padrick.
(Great choice of name by the way.)
