Not always, I know of one who insists on hanging back to last.

Dates back to when the keeper was a theoretical No 1 (English keepers didn't usually wear a number), the two full backs 2 and 3 and so on to right-wing as 11. The team was led out by the captain, followed by the rest in numerical order. Now we still have the basic practice, though the numbers won't be sequential.

Why do you call a football pitch a 'park?

Lots of park football is played and shouts of "Hoof it up the park" have perhaps led to it coming into popular parlance? Or perhaps the number of grounds called some sort of "Park" like Windsor Park, Fratton Park, Septic Park, Ninian Park or Upton Park, (yeah, I know it's really the Boleyn Ground).

At Firhill (Partick Thistle), the shout is usually "Hoof it OUT the park" - this gives us a better chance of not getting a hammering.

Yes, sir.prize left wing was 11. I was mentally reading left to right upwards with 1 at the bottom, but in practice the scheme was to set the team diagram with 1, the goalkeeper, at the top of the page, then number left to right downwards. making the left winger last, No 11.
