Renal Angioplasty

My 9 year old son had renal angioplasty last Friday. He is crippled with pain in his groin where the line was inserted. He does have a big bruise. I have spoken to the hospital and they are not unduly concerned as it does not sound like infection or internal bleeding to them. Has anyone had renal angioplasty and experienced problems?

No I have not had renal angioplasty.

This is usually a safe procedure and the main complication is bruising around the site of the cannula insertion and as long as this does not become infected, it it no big deal. You know the signs of infection...I am sure.

Very occasionally there may be internal bleeding, but this is associated with abdominal pain.

He shouldn't be "crippled" with pain, but just keep an eye on the groin area for swelling pain to the touch associated with a feeling of malaise and general flu like symptoms and if they do occur, then contact the hospital again.

Thanks for the help, Sqad. He is still in terrible pain and unable to walk. He has had a scan and xray post op, is on pain killers and nothing helps. I am going to chase the hospital again on Monday. It is not acceptable that he is being left in terrible pain and we are expected to wait a month or more for a physio appointment, although I am sceptical this will help.

I unfortunately had a Femoral Angioplasty in 1992 & although it was a long time ago I still suffer from the after effects. After the procedure the operating team had great difficulty in stemming the bleeding & the outcome of this was that I developed Arrithmia which could not be corrected & finally left me with Atrial Fibrillation which I have to this day. My point being that sometimes treatment can turn out to be worse than the ailment one started out with.
