cousin gives lift to friend each week to supermarket-friend leaves £3in car for petrol cousintold her she would buy lottery tickets --for over a year nothing --- friend has not used car for 3 weeks but cousin still buys lottery tickets-this weekend 5 numbers came up winnings over £900.My cousin wants to know if she should share winnings-said i would ask A Bs
entirely up to her, I would have thought. It wasn't like she was given the £3 for lottery tickets, she was given it for petrol, so it's her money to invest as she pleases. I'd give the friend £50 (without saying how much I'd actually won), because it is nice to spread a little good luck around; but she certainly doesn't have to.

thanks a lot for all answers--- gave cousin same advice best to keep quiet just enjoy -actually it is very good of cousin to give her door to door lift for £3-also it is poor return for5 numbers but from no winnings still welcome
It really depends on what was agreed at the start of the arrangement. If its a genuine petrol contribution - perhaps the trip costs more than £3 - then your cousin is in fact buying the lottery tickets with her own money anyway and has no obligation to buy tickets or share any winnings. It would be a nice gesture to buy a gift or pay for a shared meal out ... as it sounds like your cousin would not be buying any lottery tickets if it weren't for this arrangement. If your cousin goes to the store any way and didn't need to be reimbursed any petrol money then she might have said from the start that she didn't want any petrol money and that's why she is buying lottery tickets instead. If the friend was handing over money each week in the expectation that it is being spent on lottery tickets to share, then your cousin needs to decide what she would expect if their positions were reversed. I would pop round and ask for the 3 weeks money for lottery tickets and in exchange hand over an envelope with half the winnings in :)
