After a thorough evaluation I bought one for Mrs C to replace her 2 year old original Kindle. It's much brighter but yet, easy on the eyes. It has 24 levels of brightness that are easily set wit a light bulb button. Unusually long battery life... maybe ten days even with the light left on. Along with other features, Mrs. C especially likes te selectable typefaces...

Only about $20 (US) more than her original Kindle.
You could look at the Nook Glowlight - serious competition for the Kindle, with some distinct advantages.
don't get a kindle you are restricted to amazon, get a kobo, the new kobo glo is £99 so £10 cheaper than the kindle, it has a back light and an open platform , lighter and slimmer than the kindle, 1 million free books and you can borrow books from your local library on it, it also has built in chess, soduko and you can expand the memory with a sd card.
the nook has a slower processor and is slower on the touch reaction
I looked at the Kobo Glo, dotty, but found that it had some limitations that were either just irritating or plainly limiting. I was put off that for library or internet available books, one has to download Adobe’s Digital Editions app to sync the reader with any books from the internet or borrow from your local library. Additionally, the cost of many of the books is more expensive than from Amazon and lastly, If you like read a serial type books, one most likely can't get them except from Amazon.

Although I didn't personally experience it, a review of the Kobo also says "...A problem exists if one selects a book via a search. The price of the book was not displayed. Instead, a “Buy Now” button just lingered there, taunting me. I finally tapped the button and was taken to page where the price is displayed next to my payment method. Having to tap another button to uncover the price of a book is a bad user experience, and it’s something a company in Kobo’s position should be working hard to fix."
When my Kindle broke several months out of warranty, Amazon replaced it for about £50, reimbursing the cost of the original. It is probably worth telephoning and negotiating for a new white against your broken Kindle.
I completely agree with Euphemia - contact Amazon, you may be pleasantly surprised with their attitude.

i was NOT pleasently surprised by their attitude, when i rang them last week - the best they could offer was one of the £69 ones for £55
I was refunded the broken 3G Kindle and paid, I think £48, for a replacement 3G. Go back to them and try and get a better deal against the Paperwhite.

i have rung them twice :( i am rather annoyed as it was a replacemnt that broke in exactly the same way the original did
