My maternal Grandad always wore shirt and tie, even to go to work in the factory. He played jazz on the piano very badly ( although at 10 years old I thought it was wonderful) He had to have the latest gadget, which drove my Gran mad as they were not well off, he even had a baby grand in the front room once!
He bred canaries in the spare bedroom. He loved Spike Milligan and Glen Miller, I could go on, just wish he'd been alive to see my kids.
my maternal grandmother worked in a munitions factory during the war, she was widowed in the 1930's.
My paternal grandfather was a carpenter always smelt of wood and linseed oil, he smoked woodbines lighting one fag from the end of the last until he had his breakfast, then none till the next day, he was 92 when he died. A nice man.
Maternal Granddad died when I was 3. All I remember is his smokers' cough and that he drove a Rover P6 until he retired, when he bought a Mk. I Ford Escort.

I wish I had remembered the person now more than their automotive preferences but I was big into cars at that young age.
my paternal grandfathe died when I was nearly 3 -no memories other than a slight recollection of my brother giving me a piggy back so I could look through the window and wave to him in his bed (grandmother wouldn't let the children in to see him). My maternal grandfather died the day after my 4th birthday so, sadly, again, no memories really other than greenouse tomatoes, rolling cigarettes, empty golden virginia tins (presents for me and my brother) and his maroon cardigan! to this day though, the smell of golden virginia or greenhouse tomatoes reminds me of him.....
I knew all of my grandparents and 2 great-grandmothers. My dads grandmother died in '77 when I was 6. She had dementia. My mums grandmother died around the same time as the Queen Mum. She was 92. My mums dad died of cancer when I was 18. My dads dad died in '97 of old age and his mum died in 2004 - she had dementia as well.

My mums mum is still going strong at 82 :o)
We know nothing at all about Dads side of the family, Mums father was killed in a pit accident in 1936 and her mother died in '55 when I was seven about the only thing I can remember about her was that she was a tiny woman with very long dark hair.
