Wood Burning Stove

Are wood burning stoves going to be eligible for grants under the 'green deal'? I thought I read somewhere they would be, but I might have dreamt it - wishful thinking!

Yes you can ummmm, but they still need storage space and they aren't cheap. You can make your own. Mr LL made some but they took an age to dry out!!

I get a ton of wood for £45 and that last me 2 - 3 months

Is that your only source of heating Helen. Fortunately, we have had a free supply for a good few years. £45.00 per ton is quite good, but I have lost track of the costs now. Wouldn't be easy to store it though in a lot of modern gardens ;o)

Sorry LL I only just saw your reply - no we have oil central heating which we try not to use as it is very expensive, we also have 2 coal fires.

We live in a rather old large house and most of the time just have the wood burner and the coal fire on, coal costs us about £50 a month which is still a lot cheaper than burning oil.

We have moved to a property that has it's own supply of trees that we can cut down, but also we have a local tree surgeon who is willing to supply wood to us free of charge, plus a few builders that have wood from property that they are renovating. Anyone that is looking for wood, could try the last two suggestions, note that you cannot burn painted wood though, it has to be natural!

The best way to get your logs is to befriend local tree surgeons, gardeners, forest managers, farmersor local council! Logs are often a burden for all of them and generally are happy for you to take them off their hands!

We have loads of wood - the only problem is we are getting on, and sawing etc. becomes rather harder work.
Lot so birch, which can be burnt after 6 weeks - although I t hink we have a 4 year supply of various woods chopped and ready to go.
Hope to find someone who is prepared to fell it in exhange for free wood for them.
