Brass lacquer removal

I have four 70's brass cande holders and the lacquer is one beginning to fail so I have to clean them. The trouble only a bit of the lacquer has failed so how do I get it all off and where may I buy new lacquer to relacquer them after I have cleaned them? Many thanks,David

Many years ago I removed the lacquer from a letter box using nail varnish remover, polished it up and then re lacquered it using an aerosol spray can of clear lacquer which I bought from a car accessory shop. worked a treat for me.

Thank you, I'll give it a go. The trouble is, modern nail varnish removers Don't contain acetone like the old ones. Do you think That would be a problem? Anyway thank you very much I'll give it a go. David

If you can't find nail polish remover with acetone, there's plenty of pure acetone on eBay - in larger quantities, too.

Quite a few nail polish removers do still contain acetone. You could also try acrylic nail removers, they're very high in acetone. Sell it in Boots etc.

Probably, Builder, wouldn't fancy that stuff on me old bell ringers though.

I think Builder's suggestion would be worth a try if acetone doesn't work, brush cleaner might do the trick too.

We have just refurnished all our brass doorhandles(previously lacquered)we used cellulose thinner to remove the old lacquer polished the handles and re lacquered with metal lacquer.Both products available at Homebase orB&Q.they look wonderful.

oops sorry Bramleyboy we used paint stripper to get rid of the old lacquer.The thinner was to clean the brushes with!!senior moment!!
