A jewish tailor and his son went to a wholeseller to buy cloth.An assistant produced a number of webs of cloth for their inspection.A dozen webs were chosen.The assistant quoted the total price to be £1,000.The father offered £750.00.When the assistant went to ask his boss if the offer was acceptable the son said to his father''What are you haggling over the price for when you know you are not going to pay anyway?'' The father replied''I don't want to take him for too much.''

Probably added because of the old caricature of Jewish folk being cautious with money. The humour is separate and to do with if you were going to steal something then it is being considered by the tailor morally more acceptable to steal £750 than £1000.
