What's the name of the single

In 1972, I had a French Student Exchange. What we immediately had in common was a love for a recent 'chart' single. It was a jazz-ish violin-led track, with the violin 'slurring' at the end of each phrase. I actually had the single, but in the ensuing years, have lost it. My knowledge of both the artist and title have also escaped me. I've spent many hours trawling the net, but in vain! It's not Violinski, or any other 'chart hit' that I can fathom. It must have been pan-European because of my 'Exchange's' knowing. It's the last piece of my musical jigsaw. Please can anybody help? I would be everso grateful. Many thanks, Jon

possibly 10538 overture by Electric light orchestra. This was a hit in 1971 and I believe featured the cello as lead instrument

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain the artist was not British - the style was more Grappelli/Menhuin. Thanks all the same.

Was it an actual instrumental track or if there were lyrics was it in English or French? If it was sung I keep thinking of You're a Lady by Peter Skellern which was 1972 and I'm sure as well as piano there was violins featured. Intriguing!

Was it an instrumental called Jig-A-Jig by a British band called East of Eden? It came from their album called Snafu. Was a hit in April 1971, all over Europe and in the States too I think

Hello, and many, many thanks for trying to put me out of my misery. Alas, no - it wasn't Peter Skellern or East of Eden, both of which artists I am familiar with. This particular track, (sticking my head out), was, I believe a one-off. It was an instrumental and the violin was the melodic 'voice' throughout. It was an incredibly catchy tune - and when I finally find out what it was and download it I'll mail it to everybody who is trying to help me. The nearest thing I can think of, and this is really obscure, to be taken with a pinch of salt, would be a slowed-down similar-sort-of-melody to that of Jean Michael Jarre's 'Oxygene'. I don't know if this helps. The violin was so confident in its delivery - very tongue in cheek.
