External Hard Drives
9 Answers
My son wants an external hard drive for Christmas, 1 terabyte apparently. There are loads on eBay, all with quite mixed reviews, so, can any of you lovely techie people recommend one to me?
Many thanks

Up till recently I would have said western digital but their new 1tb drives arent getting great write ups. Is speed important to you and do you need it to be USB powered or can it be connected to the mains?
External (USB) hard drives are all much the same, if you take care of them they'll all last OK... if you treat them badly they'll all die much the same. the mixed reviews tend to be due to people not realising external hard drives are incredibly sensitive bits of equipment when they are running.
Jut buy any one and tell the son to treat it like it's made from glass when it's plugged in, the slightest knock can destroy any hard drive when it running.

Can I concur with woofgang concerning Western Digital. I bought one a couple of years ago and the 'clicking' sound they apparently all (or majority) make drove me potty.
I am in no way connected to them but would recommend Hitachi Touro

I have 2x2TB sets which are basically on 24/7 and have been since getting them. Absolute faith in them.
I know this is twice the size but it is only about £15 more than the 1TB and has its own power source
