It's stage dressing
It might also cause problems with continuity.
I remember seeing an interview with Larry Hagman of Dallas fame.

He was asked why when everyone sat down to breakfast nobody actually ever ate anything.

He said it was a eal problem if they had to do a retake.

If there was half filled tea or coffee cups, or half filled glasses, or half eaten pieces of toast, then if they had to do a retake it would make continuity a problem.

So the anwswer was to not touch ANYTHING, then if they had to do a retake it would not take long to reset up the scene.
apparently it's not even real beer in the pubs so i'm not applying for any auditions for extras
On BBC3 at the moment is a series called "Movie Mistakes".

Amongst the mistakes it shows are scenes were continuity is all over the place.

This can include people wearing different clothes in the same scene, so when you cut back and forth between people talking the person can be seen wearing different clothes.

Or if a scene is over a meal, and the people are eating the drinking, then as the scene goes on the same glass can be full, then empty, then full, then half empty and so on.

Some of these scenes are quite funny, like in say a car crash when say the front winscreen is shattered, then a few seconds later in the same car, the windscreen is back normal again
I just wish the actors would act drinking a lot better than they do.It annoys me when they get a fresh cup of tea or coffee and take a big drink of it,tipping the cup up as if it was a cold drink, when it's supposed to be hot.
Same when watchin television in the soaps they are getting programmes none of the rest of us get .
One reason why water wasn't used much in studio is because the studio floors were painted with a water-based paint. If water was spilt on the paint, it would start to wash off, causing problems if anyone stepped in it.

Added to which, camera cables run around the floors of studios, and water and electricity don't mix.
