Hey there. I'm new to here, but i've already noticed that theres alot of clever and helpfull people on here!

Anyhoo, my question is : Me (a light skinned redhead) is pregnant for the first time with my husband (who is of a mixed race-black hair). We was curious to know the skin colour and hair colour of the child (although i know it is not 100% definate). Going back, my husbands father was a pale skinned red head whilst his mum was a dark skinned black haired women. My parents had both dark brown hair although my grandad had red hair! So, anyone got any ideas on skin & hair colour of my baby-to-be?

I can't remember who told me but they assured me that hair is not hereditary. This seems to be true as I have dark curly hair, my hubby is mid brown and wavy too both my daughters are fair and pump water straight (yes they are definately biologically ours before you ask!!!) Anyhow it will be a nice surprise for you both, good luck luv Shazza xx
Yes I agree, it will be a nice surprise. There are no guarantees with genetics, it's just pot luck. My mother-in-law and one of her brothers both had red hair (of the other 3 siblings 1 was blond, 1 had dark hair and 1 was auburn!). Of all the children and grandchildren of them only 1 has red hair (though she is the granddaughter of the brother with red hair). My two children are not alike and in fact the elder one takes after his dad and the younger one is like me, there doesn't seem to be a mix at all, yet some children I know are a complete mix of their parents and others don't look like either! One of my best friends has light brown hair and brown eyes, her husband has dark brown hair and brown eyes yet both their children are blond with blue eyes!

Hair colour IS hereditary, see HERE for an explanation.

if its a male more chance he will have red hair.... and if its female she will probably have black....... ofcouse hair is hereditary ...
You will have to wait and see. I think you will have more chance of getting dark brown hair. But who knows nature is a wonderful thing.
depends on whose genes are the stronger. My dad was pale skin red hair and mum ruddy complexion and dark hair had 4 children all different. My sister, dark hair ruddy compelxion, my brother blonde hair ruddy complexion, my other brother black hair and pale skin and me red hair pale skin and freckles - needless to say I took after my fathers side of the family - the welsh!! so you cannot say - but it will nice surprise - hope all goes well for you
Brown is a dominant gene, although I understand that ginger/red hair is just a variant of brown. To be blue eyed the child would have to inherit a blue allele from each parent, if one brown and one blue the baby will be brown eyed. My Mum has black hair brown eyes and Dad dark brown hair and eyes, I have dark brown hair light brown eyes, I have a brother who has ginger hair, fair skin and light brown eyes. I think therefore it is very unlikely that your child will be blonde or blue eyed, but certainly more likely to be brown haired and brown eyed, but could be red haired. Sorry you also mentioned skin colour, again more likely to be dark skinned but could also be fair skinned like you but less likely because again brown/dark is dominant colour when it comes to genetics.
your child will probably have dark eyes. your husbands genetics for eye colour is one dominant gene for brown eyes from his mother and one recessive gene from his father. Your genes for eye colour will also contain the dominant brown gene so the two dominant brown genes of you and your husband should come together so your offspring has the dominant colour of brown too. skin colour is due to the amount of melanin your body produces controlled by genes so therefore your husbands gene for high melanin production will mix with your gene and you will have a child with a beautiful healthy skin colour that will reflect that he or she shall produce more melanin than you but a little less tan your husband.

Dearest ladygucci - my sister and I are both fair skinned redheads and she has a son with her bf who is of mixed race, with dark skin, hair and eyes.

Her son is a gorgeous mix of pale skin, huge dark eyes and redish tinted afro curls!! Scrummy!!

Am sure yours will be equally as lovely!
