Young Tony was very slow in his wits, and people often used to tease him by offering him a choice between a 50p coin and a 1 coin. Tony always chose the 50p coin - because it was bigger, everyone supposed. One day a visitor gently pointed out to Tony that he would be better off taking ther 1 coin. Why did Tony disagree?

Perhaps he needed a 50p coin for a slot machine - electricity meter etc.

Tony keeps getting given 50p coins at the moment. If he started choosing the 1 coin, people would soon stop making the offer to him so he wouldn't get any money. So he's not as slow-witted as he seems.

As explicitly described in a song "Luther" by Willie Nelson.
