I am trying to find out how much it will cost to post a parcel to USA - it is about shoe box size weighing about 0.75 kg . I don't want a courier company I want to take it to the post office and just hand it over if possible - surely the website cannot be right that the cheapest rate is almost £35. However if this works out too expensive what other options are there ?

Then for a 750g parcel it'll be
251 - 300g £5.54
every 100g up to 2000g (5000g for Printed Papers) add
£1.22

This therefore should give you a rough idea of the cost.

Hope this helps!

DHL is your best bet, better and quicker than the post office, you can take it into a smiths store to send
Just log on to the post office site and you can put the size and weight into their calculator and it will give you the price. If you register and open an account you can also print out the postage.
Sorry think I just misread your post, thought you were saying the courier was £35.

£35 is quite cheap for airmail delivery. DHL charges around £60:

(Parcelforce Worldwide has comparable prices for their 'Express' and 'Priority' services; I assume that you're quoting from their 'Value' or 'Economy' rates).

Air fuel is very expensive. A 747 needs nearly 100 tonnes of the stuff to get across the Atlantic, with every gram of the load adding to the quantity of the fuel required. (That's why airlines charge so much for baggage). In an age when it can easily cost you 50 quid to watch a football match or to buy a West End theatre ticket, £35 to send something across 4000 miles should be regarded as a bargain!

Unless you know someone who is travelling to the USA (who could then post your parcel upon arrival) I very much doubt that you'll find any cheaper option.

Sorry :(

Chris
By the way Buenchico, you can`t get someone who is travelling to post something for you due to the fact that they can`t carry packages or otherwise for anyone else (security issues),
Use the Royal Mail Price finder

Airmail small packets £11.64

I know the rules but if a trusted friend asked me to take a parcel to the USA I'd happily lie when asked 'have you packed this yourself'. Wouldn't you?
Heavens no buenchico. I wouldn`t lie to airline security. I`m surprised anyone would in this day and age. Scary!
Chris I have given such a parcel to a friend who travelled to Texas this week, I showed her what was inside [clothes] and left it open for her to seal before posting and provided the sellotape and postage money in dollars.
Bueunchico.
Chris ,you going voluntarily to the USA ????
I thought they would have to send the US Marshals and a set of handcuffs to get you on the plane ;-)
