Discussing this at work but not sure how true it is. I heard years ago the bookies criteria for it being a 'White Christmas' is if snow lays on the top of the British Telecom Tower in London (what was the Post Office Tower)

Guess to bet on a White Christmas you'd have to choose a location?

You can actually select where you're betting will have a White Christmas.

You can now place a bet on a white Christmas this year. Will snow fall this Christmas? There are odds on a white Christmas available for different airports around the UK as well as the London weather centre.

You can place a bet on a white Christmas at Heathrow airport, Glasgow airport, Manchester airport and Dublin airport. White Christmas betting is betting on any snowfall being registered at these specific locations, it doesn't have to be a vast amount. Place your white Christmas bet and hope for snow to fall.

It's for reasons like this that I wouldn't be bothered betting on a White Christmas. Naturally you need some sort of criteria for it, but the criteria are often largely irrelevant to one's own area (or even to most people's idea of a White Christmas.
For example had I bet on a "White Christmas" a couple of years ago I'd have lost despite the fact that there were several inches of snow on the ground in our village, but the top of the Air Ministry roof in London or whatever it is was steadfastly snow-flake free. The fact that there are several other locations these days doesn't really make it seem any less daft. I'll use the money I'd lose by buying another sledge :-)
Hi redman, your link wasn't there when I copied mine, then the blooming screen froze as I pasted it :o(
