Hey Jan, Twitter is very entertaining as well as promotional social media. You can use it in any way. Many peoples uses Twitter to stay connected with their family and friends and other uses it for marketing purposes.
Twitter is basically used to share your ideas, images, videos and most importantly for fun purposes. So i am damn sure its not a waste of time, you use it in your free time am sure you will start liking to spend your time on it. :)
