can anyone point me to information as to how much control an employer has over an employees behaviour outside of the work environment

For example people like soap actors and football players may well have entries in their contracts to say that cannot take drugs outside "work" or appear in certain adverts.
They may also have to be of general good behaviour or they may get the sack.
There may be wording in your contract to say you cannot have a relationship with someone at your work for example.
So I suggest you try to get a copy of your work contract from your HR department (if you have one).
Depends almost entirely on the type of work. Many companies require their staff to wear uniforms and a strict rule would be that the company image is protected. E.g a bus driver would not be allowed in a pub at any time while in uniform.

I don't have any links but I've heard that if you're on a work's night out and you bring shame and degradation upon yourself then your employer can discipline you once back in work as there's some kind of work relatedness going on there.
I'm sure I sound entirely unconvincing but someone who has more reason to know about this mentioned it to me ages ago.

When I worked for Warner Bros Shop we weren't supposed to smoke whilst in uniform and when I worked for a Bank we weren't supposed to have a second job without permission (it could indicate monetary problems which could mean that you were tempted to steal money), and of course being prosecuted for stealing something would have meant you would have been in BIG trouble.
