Was there a time when performing dog acts were fairly common? I think I remember seeing them on the TV show, Sunday Night at the London Palladium.

Poodles were known as circus dogs because Russians in circuses soon discovered that the breed was very intelligent, quick to learn, and, above all, agile with an extraordinary sense of balance. The coat also took vegetable dyes well and was readily clipped into attractive patterns; originally to assist it and protect its joints in swimming, it being a water dog.
