Another Gastric By-pass Question :)
7 Answers
I had a gastric By-pass on 28th August and realised pretty soon afterwards that although I should only have been able to drink small sips of fluids/soups/very sloppy foods for three weeks or so it didn't happen that way.
From the start I could drink whole cups of drink and because I was always hungry, after a week started on firmer and firmer food. After less than three weeks post op I could eat anything in any quantity. I do get dumping syndrome so can't tollerate high sugar or high fat foods but otherwise it is as if I didn't even have the op.
I had a barium meal xray and according to the consultant there is nothing wrong with the bypass. Nothing is stretched or out of place, it looks as it does on everyone elses succesful bypass. The consultant (a well known Dr) took great pains to say that the operation had been a success and that his work was not the problem. (was he covering himself perhaps?)
Although he has agreed to go back in and tighten it up a bit, he was VERY reluctant to do that and even though I have paid £12k for this operation he was hinting that he would get me back in under the NHS to 'look at the scaring' and do the tightening up then.
Not only am I pissed off at this very expensive operation not working I am perplexed as to why he is trying to get it fixed on the NHS and not do it under the 23 month follow up care plan.
Also I have been trying to find out if this happens a lot but can't find any information on other people this has happened to. I can't possibly be the only one surely????

I don't know what "dumping syndrome" is....
If it's not tight, presumably it's because you started eating in quantity too soon and didn't follow instructions. It's not therefore fair that the NHS should pick up the tab for this, when the NHS is so desperately pressed for cash for looking after people who are in need of medical treatment.
It sounds to me as if you stretched the band by eating too much, too soon.

Sorry to hear your by pass is not working. I have two friends who have recently had successful treatment. You could try this forum:-

Were you given a diet an to follow, and are you loosing weight? From what I've read it differs from a gastric band where the stomach is made smaller, with a by-pass a pouch is made so you absorb less food and any excess is excreted as waste.
Can you get a second opinion esewhere? It may cost you, but if you can prove the procedure wasn't done properly you might be compensated. Seems ridiculous you've paid out all that money and not have much to show for it
