My wife & I are hapily married. We are both white (and so are our ancestors), but our newborn child is coloured (very dark browned, almost black with 'afro' hair).

The experts at the hospital assure me the child is mine. I have no reason to disbelieve them, or my wife, but I have never come across this anomoly before.

Is there anyone out there who has genuinly come across this / had this, or should I dis-trust my wife.

I am not naive, but I do trust her, then again... How can this happen to us ???

Although eye colour is genetically determined, a childs eye colour is not reliant on parental eye colour alone. Both sets of grandparents eyes would also need to be taken into any calculations, so take care before acting on such information.
www.athro.com -click on mendelian genetics-click on human eye colour genes and work it out on the inter-active eye game.
You may a well go for the DNA test because the seeds of doubt have been sown in your head already.
Best wishes to the three of you and congratulations on the birth of a lovely child.

came across your question doing a google search for afro hair...cos mine is....I am 45 years old, born to a white mother and white father...I have light brown skin, afro hair and black features ie nose and mouth. My brother and sister do not have this hair texture or features, except that my sisters lips are quite full but not as much so as mine. All my life both blackand white people have referred to me as mixed race or black, but my parents have explained to me that I am technically a genetic throwback. Hope this helps

I do not recognise the term `throwback`. What does this mean/infer? Get a DNA test immediately. As far as science is concerned this is the only way to be sure. As for your wife has she been listening to reggae more than usual? Watching cricket , eating curried goat or showing any other `w indies` symptoms?

It really could just be a bit of a fluke and will pass or it could be a genetic throwback as you can't actually be completely certain about your ancestry. Because the product of black/white relationships don't always come out looking black or mixed sometimes they're born looking utterly white and stay that way. This is not actually a rare occurence, I personally doubt they're very many pure whites out there, there certainly can't be any pure blacks left...

Best of luck
