I have spoken about this before on AB but dont in anyway profess to know a great deal about it.
As we approach the "End Of The World As We Know It" this year, I often wonder whether it will have a profound effect on those that truly beleive this when the world doesnt actually end? I dont knock beliefs or faiths no matter how absurd or scientifically impossible they may appear but this is a very rare occasion that a beleif or faith in something can be proved wrong. How do you react to that?

Besides, the Mayans didn't predict steps reforming, that's far, far worse.

i donlt think its is a belief or faith, i think its a misinterpretation of the mayan calendar
The world best not end, I have booked the village hall for my sons birthday a few weeks after.

In the sense that people are genuinely expecting the world to end as we know it, it is beleived by some. I really dont know a great deal but what do they say when 2013 arrives "oh well....?"
or dec 22
There are various looney-fringes of main-stream religions who are salivating at the prospect of the end of the world/the rapture.

It's failure to manifest has been variously blamed on 'misunderstanding/misinterpreting' the prophecies, bad maths, etc.

Reaching the end of the Mayan Long-count calendar is really neither here nor there...
Besides, the Mayans didn't predict steps reforming, that's far, far worse.

LOL doomey it really is!
Weren't those the guys that made thousands of human sacrifices and ate their hearts?
there have been quite a few 'end of days' dates in the last few years so already quite a few people have been disappointed. They just get over it don't they? -and make excuses and re calculate their dates. I find it interesting that some humans have this almost longing or delight for an apocalyptic event -they are of course going to survive and live off the land and start a new race where everyone loves one another - Mmmmm...
Even the Mayans didn't predict the end of the world. Dec21st is just as far as they got when writing down their calendar.
I have just bought a 2113 calendar and it ends 31st Dec 2113. Is that when the world will end, or shall I just buy another calendar?
Perhaps, if we all keep buying calendars, the world will never end.
Pah to all those doomsayers. I've found the solution. Buy a calendar.
@graham LOL! Quite right too - and the Mayans would not have picked the actual date of 21st Dec as the Julian calender dates did not exist- it would have been the Winter Solstice or Equinox which would have been the end of their year
